As the vibrant hues of summer begin to fade into the golden tones of fall, September arrives with a special significance. This month is not only a transition into cooler weather and cozy sweaters but also a time to honor and celebrate the rich tapestry of Hispanic heritage. Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15th to October 15th, invites us to recognize and appreciate the profound contributions of Hispanic and Latinx cultures. To kick off this celebration, we're excited to introduce our September Book of the Month—a compelling read that embodies the spirit and essence of Hispanic heritage. This book promises to take you on a journey through a captivating story that is said to "feel like the most entertaining conversation you've ever eavesdropped."

Latinx
Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the significant impact that Hispanic and Latinx individuals have made across all facets of society. It's a time to celebrate not only the history and diverse cultures but also the ongoing contributions of Latinx people in shaping our communities, art, politics, and beyond. By honoring this heritage, we recognize the strength, resilience, and creativity these cultures have inspired across the globe.
Latinx culture is a vibrant mix of traditions, languages, and histories, enriched by influences from indigenous roots, African heritage, and European colonization. From the colorful festivals and culinary delights to the rhythms of music and dance, Latinx culture offers a wealth of experiences that reflect a deep connection to family, community, and identity. Each Latinx community has its unique customs and stories, contributing to a broader narrative that celebrates diversity within unity.
It is also a great time to celebrate Latinx literature, a genre that offers profound insights into the Latinx experience. Latinx literature serves as a powerful tool for storytelling, preserving cultural heritage, and amplifying voices that might otherwise be unheard. Latinx authors bring to life the joys, struggles, and triumphs of their communities through novels, poetry, essays, and memoirs. Their works provide a window into their own experiences and foster empathy and understanding across cultural boundaries.
Book of the Month
There's someone on the phone for you... it's our Busy Bee Book Club September Book of the Month: Oye by Melissa Mogollon.
Luciana is the baby of her large Colombian American family. And despite usually being relegated to the sidelines, she now finds herself the voice of reason in the middle of their unexpected crisis. Her older sister, Mari, is away at college and reduced to a mere listening ear on the other end of their many phone calls, so when South Florida residents are ordered to evacuate before a hurricane, it's up to Luciana to deal with her eccentric grandmother, Abue, who's refusing to leave. But the storm isn't the only danger. Abue, normally glamorous and full of life, is given a crushing medical diagnosis. While she'd prefer to ignore it and focus on upholding her reputation and her looks instead, the news sets Abue on her own personal journey, with Luciana reluctantly along for the ride. | ![]() |
